Duet work-in-progress with Rachel Boggia, set to Amiss, by Michael Wall, and Dans le reve laisse par la ballade des pendus de Villon, by Jehan Alain, performed by Easley Blackwood.

Themes explored:

• Qualitative range of being in partnership - from sensitive to raucous to responsive

• Indulging in independent moments

• Willingness to consider bold compositional choices.

Notes
Rachel and I collaboratively constructed this dance during two rehearsal periods. The first, in mid-July at Connecticut College in New London, CT, began with improvisation, allowing us to become reacquainted after 15 years. We also employed a cumulative compositional method Rachel developed with Annie Kloppenberg called “Go and go”, done without talking or editing, and where either partner can prompt a restart to refresh the phrase’s pathway. Our quick rehearsal period ended with a showing viewed by Leslie Seiters and Ron Estes, esteemed choreographers/performers based in San Diego.

A second residency in Ann Arbor brought more shape and development, including a fecund work session with text written on mirrors (images below). Amy Chavasse watched a run of the work, and a conversation following yielded the title.
